In 2015 Hyder Consulting prepared a report for the National Environment Protection Council which, using baseline data from the 2013-14 financial year, measured the stocks and fate of end-of-life tyres. This study, updating information within the 2012 report, undertook the following:

• reviewed and updated the method and tools from the 2012 report to update tyre data and trends
• consistent with the developed method, obtained data on, and analysed the trends in the sources and fate of end-of-life tyres, and
• assessed current and future markets for Australian tyre derived products.

The study was able to obtain a more comprehensive picture of the tyre seconds export market and identified several opportunities to support ongoing development of the Australian tyre recycling market. The material will be a useful reference for those working to advance tyre recycling, such as the tyre industry’s tyre stewardship organisation - Tyre Stewardship Australia, and jurisdictional governments with responsibility for local regulatory settings relating to end of life tyres.
