Roles and Responsibilities
Roles and Responsibilities
The State of Victoria chairs the group tasked with developing this component of the Integrated National Heritage Policy. An officials document was prepared and circulated to key State/Territory and Commonwealth agencies, to promote debate about the roles and responsibilities of different levels of government in identifying, managing, protecting and promoting heritage places.
This clarification is essential, if a national policy is to be effectively implemented. Following discussions based on this document, a report has been drafted for comment by relevant government agencies in all jurisdictions.
The final draft report will include the basis for heritage roles and responsibilities under legislation and the 1997 Council of Australian Governments (COAG) Agreement; requirements for nomination, assessment and listing of national and Commonwealth heritage places; World Heritage nominations; management of heritage places; and the role of the Register of the National Estate and the Heritage Chairs and Officials forum.
